It is good advice - but why? you ask.
Because what you wish for just might come true. I have bumped into this realization several times over the last months as I continue to put together my new French life. I mean really!, it is unbelievable that a girl from Southern California can hop down to a castle such as the one above to spend a sunny Sunday wandering around.
I remember standing over the trash compactor in my San Diego kitchen about 4 years ago saying to my husband that I needed something more in my life - experiences and activities that were somehow more complicated, more interesting than what I felt was going on in my life at the time.............put a check mark next to that one. There has barely been a boring minute since.
A French lover - check. What began as a joke as advice for the best way to improve my French has become reality. I used to counter that suggestion by saying that my husband wasn't on board the French boyfriend solution for furthering his wife's language struggles. Well, things change.
Living a romantic life as an ex pat in the City of Light - check. As it turned out, this wish was surprisingly easy to engineer. What seemed like an impossibility just a few years ago has become my everyday reality. All's it took was an oh so simple mid life crisis by my husband, followed by selling or giving away almost all the stuff of a 25 year marriage and jumping on a one-way transatlantic flight. Piece of cake!
Is that too much sarcasm?
But seriously, so many of my wildest dreams have become reality that caution is in order. I realized that we humans are much more powerful than we give ourselves credit for. It appears that we can dream and then just take the first step in their direction and those dreams can begin to come true. The scary thing is that for every dream that becomes reality, there is a cost .......and the price tags are often hidden. If I could have seen those tags would I have decided that some of my dreams might just be too expensive?
Some things one will never know.
The castle is beautiful. I would be in heaven with the gardens. My garden is brown right now. My season is coming......
