When we left the party last night, full of those choc chip cookies I mentioned and other American dishes like - taco salad and guacamole (yes - I had to explain to more than one French person peering at these dishes that this is indeed American food, especially if one is from Southern California like I am), it was 1:30 am and 2 States had reported results - both for McCain. We went to bed not knowing a thing. It felt really weird.
To pry ourselves out of bed early this morning, my french man (MFM), said, Let's go see President McCain! And that is the moment I knew - I wanted Obama. Yes, I know, my republican mother is now doing flips in her grave and my family will probably disown me, but that is the way it is. Blame it on living overseas perhaps, who knows, but at that instant the thought of waking up to Obama losing was a terrible thought.
But why oh why? I can hear my mom wailing down from above. Lots of reasons but for me the main one is that the whole country is so energized, the entire world is energized. This is a big deal. I am pretty certain that there would not be this same kind of energy if McCain had won. Sad to say but true. And this energy will turn into action. I think that racism as we have known it will be dead, done, over, with Pres Obama and his family in the White House. The world will look at us differently knowing that we elected a black president by a landslide. We will look at ourselves differently too. Change is a good thing especially when you are struggling and the last few years have seen one disaster after another - probably not all GW's fault, but I think that it is time to let the other guys take a stab at solving the messes.
Today, Paris was happy for the USA and proud of us too - something that has been in short supply lately. It was nice for a change.
Do you realize that you have had this blog for almost a year now?! Congratulations! I love it and it doesn't make you feel so far away.
